The Spending Review - Schools Budget

Wednesday 20th October 2010

Chancellor George Osborne today announced an increase in funding for schools in England.  The schools budget will rise from £35bn to £39bn and, overall, the Department for Education will be required to find resource savings of 1% a year.

The rise in the schools budget however will be met with reductions elsewhere in education.  Overall the Chancellor announced a 3% reduction in cash for the DfE, from £58.4bn to £57.2bn, by 2014.  Following on from the decision to halt Building Schools for the Future (BSF), capital spending will be reduced by 60% in real terms by 2014-15.
