National Bookstart Week - Annual Celebration of Bookstart

Friday 10th June 2011

This week (Monday 6-Sunday 12 June) over 5,000 free family events have been held up and down the country in libraries, children’s centres, bookshops and other venues such as schools and local community centres. National Bookstart Week celebrates the joy of sharing stories, books and rhymes and this year the theme is All Aboard!

There is something for everyone with storytelling, rhymes, singalong, games and crafts and more. Highlights have included ’All Aboard! Noah’s Ark’ in the West Midlands, where the Bookstart team invited nursery children to join them aboard a canal barge with a storyteller, animal balloons and an ’animal encounter’ provided by Dudley Zoo. Throughout the week, all libraries and children’s centres have been holding transport and journey-themed story, song and rhyme sessions.

An event in Cardiff celebrating ’All Aboard with Bookstart Bear!’ at the Wales Millennium Centre, was held on Wednesday 8 June. Fun story-time and rhyme-time sessions, with a transport theme, took place inside the centre along with exciting transport play activities and hands-on music workshops. Outside the centre there will be a fire-engine, bikes and many more activities for families to enjoy.

Bookstart aims to help every child in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to develop a lifelong love of books for families. This year a free, specially-commissioned booklet called ’All Aboard!’, illustrated by Jess Stockham and published by Child’s Play Ltd., will be given to families at the events.
