British Geological Survey Website Offers Teaching Resource about Rock Salt

Friday 10th December 2010

With the recent massive snowfall throughout the UK, causing schools to close and traffic chaos on the roads, there has been a huge focus on the work of gritters. Gritting lorry companies are normally run, or contracted by councils, and travel along main roads spreading a coating of rock salt down. This is to help combat icy conditions that may make cars skid on slippery surfaces, or fresh snow and black ice. The road gritting process is an essential part of winter road de-icing and the free teaching resource from the British Geological Survey answers some of the most common questions students may have about how it works, and where rock salt for grit comes from.

The kids’ website Show Me all is hosting the free teaching resource all about rock salt thanks to the British Geological Survey.
